GROUP MEETING - 03 APRIL 2009
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Mrs. Aissatou DEMBELE

My dear Sisters,

I would like to thank you once more for your regular attendance and your exceptional dedication.

Before starting the meeting, I wish to address our deepest thanks, on behalf of all the group members, to our President of Honour, the untiring Mrs. Juliana NWANZE, for her hospitality and constant support to the Group.

As you will realize from our programme today, we have two very important events ahead of us:

  • The first one is about the fundraising activities (food and handicraft sales) which will be held on 08 May at IFAD.
  • The second concerns the organization of a dancing party, commonly called ‘Dinner dance’ and which we anticipate holding at WFP. In this regard, we thank Mrs. Judy Gicharu, a member of our Group and WFP Staff, for her support in liaising with the administration of WFP.

Through these two events, our objective at the end of our mandate is to eventually finance projects in Africa through project proposals submitted by the members. In this way, the challenge that I proposed to you to take up at the beginning of the year will have reached our hopes with only an initial amount of Euro 18.50.

However, I would like to point out that the limited participation of the members at the fundraising event held at WFP in March shows that there is still room for improvement while we were initially at it. The fact remains that if we need to sacrifice ourselves wholeheartedly and I appeal to all members’ understanding.

The UNWG as our umbrella already demonstrates how projects are funded. At the end of each financial year, it finances up to 20-30 projects. The funds that permit them to finance those projects are mainly from activities such as: - organization of bazaars, - periodic sale of food and art items, - organization of dancing dinner, - etc. We also participate in these fundraising activities as members affiliated to the UNWG and, if we fulfill all conditions, we can also be eligible for project financing.

For this purpose, I would like to inform you that the African Group has the same selection criteria that the UNWG has when proposing projects, that is:

- Being a member (up to date with annual contribution);
- Participate in at least four monthly meetings;
- Participate in all fundraising activities.

Therefore, I urge you to work hard and thank you for your patience and understanding.

Aïssatou DEMBELE
President
